The Nifty
50 mm

When it comes to building your camera kit there are many options and you may not know where to start. A good go-to focal length to have in your bag is the 50mm. It’s a great length that isn’t too wide or tight and is equivalent to how the human eye sees. Depending on your budget Canon has a few different options for you!

The perk of a prime lens is that there are no moving glass elements which allows you to open your aperture further than a telephoto lens and create more depth of field. This is going to allow you to further select your focus and be a little more creative with it! This is how portrait photographers are able to blur out the background completely.

Each one of Canon’s 50mm have a different quality of glass and the results will vary. The first and most affordable is the 50mm 1.8 (Found on B&H at $125) allowing you to open your aperture more than any telephoto lens. Followed by the 50mm 1.4 ($419) and 50mm 1.2L ($1499) The quality of the 1.8 wont be nearly as sharp as the 1.2 because the quality of the glass will be much different. However, if you do are trying to figure out if this is a focal length you’ll enjoy shooting with, starting with the 1.8 or 1.4 will be good options for you!
